Yellow Dragon is the one that people who are bored of dragon fruit still get excited about. Where the pink-skinned kinds trade on how they look, this one earns its reputation on flavour: the white flesh is intensely sweet, almost honeyed, with none of the bland wateriness that puts people off the supermarket fruit. Ask a grower which is the tastiest and this is usually the answer.
It is self-fertile, which matters more than it sounds. Most dragon fruit want a partner to set a decent crop and some need pollinating by hand after dark. This one will fruit perfectly well on its own.
It also ripens late — November through February — so it arrives when almost nothing else in the garden is doing anything at all. Like every dragon fruit it is a climbing cactus and needs a post or trellis of four to six feet to get up. Full sun, sharp drainage, and restraint with the hose.
What actually arrives. All our plants are under six months old and stand 4–8 inches tall at the time of shipping or pickup. These are young plants at the start of their life, not finished
specimens — that is why they cost what they do.

Care notes
Support — this is the one people miss. Dragon fruit is a climbing cactus, not a shrub. It needs a post, trellis or sturdy fence to scramble up, four to six feet of it, put in place before you plant rather than after. Without support it sprawls along the ground and fruits poorly.
Light — full sun in all but the hottest inland gardens, where a little afternoon shade stops the stems scorching.
Soil — sharp drainage above everything. A cactus mix, or a bed lightened with grit and compost. They are happy in large containers.
Water — it is a cactus. Water thoroughly, then leave it until the top couple of inches are dry. Constant damp rots the stems at the base, and that is the usual way one dies.
Feeding — a low-nitrogen fertiliser through the growing season. Too much nitrogen buys you a great deal of stem and very little fruit.
Cold — hardy in zones 10–11. They take a brief dip to around freezing and no more; below that, grow in a pot you can move.
Flowering — the flowers open for a single night and are enormous. If fruit set is disappointing, hand-pollinating with a soft brush after dark makes a striking difference.
