Double — or Mahoi, as Hawaii knows it — is a sport of the common Dwarf Cavendish, and on its first crop it behaves like one: a single head of sweet dessert bananas on a fast, sturdy plant. It is the second generation where it does the thing almost nothing else does, throwing two complete heads of fruit from one stem. Twice the harvest off the same plant, the same water and the same patch of ground.
Two is the normal result. Three or more is rare, but it happens, and the growers who have seen it tend not to stop talking about it. Worth knowing up front so you are watching for it in year two rather than feeling short-changed in year one.
Being a Cavendish sport it inherits the toughness that made Cavendish the world's banana: fast growing, heat tolerant, and hardy down to zone 8 — a full zone colder than most edible bananas will take. It gets to seven or eight feet, so it is a proper plant rather than a patio novelty, but still short enough to harvest without a ladder. Full or partial sun, rich soil, plenty of water once it is growing hard, and shelter from a hard frost.
What actually arrives. All our plants are under six months old and stand 4–8 inches tall at the time of shipping or pickup. These are young plants at the start of their life, not finished
specimens — that is why they cost what they do.

Care notes
Light — full sun. Bananas are solar panels on a stem; shade buys you leaves and no fruit.
Soil — rich and free draining, and they are greedy. Dig in compost or rotted manure before planting and top-dress every spring.
Water — the one thing they will not forgive is drought. In summer a mature plant drinks hard; keep the soil evenly moist and mulch thickly to hold it. Drainage still has to be good, though — standing water rots the corm.
Feeding — heavy feeders. A balanced fertiliser every four to six weeks through the growing season, easing off in winter.
Wind — the leaves shred in a blow. It looks alarming and the plant does not care, but a sheltered spot keeps it looking better.
Cold — see the hardiness zones on this page; they vary by variety. Frost knocks the top down, and if the corm stays unfrozen it comes back in spring. In a pot, move it under cover.
Fruiting — see the time to fruit on this page; it varies by variety. The stem that fruits then dies, which is normal and not a failure. Suckers around the base take over, so keep the strongest one or two and the plant renews itself indefinitely.
