Truly Tiny is the smallest banana in the world that still produces edible fruit. Full grown it stands two to four feet — a plant you stand on a patio table rather than one you put at the back of a border — and it fruits at that size, sweet little dessert bananas on a stem you can look down on.
The leaves are the other half of the appeal: deep green, splashed and marbled with burgundy, so it earns its keep as a foliage plant for the eleven months of the year it is not carrying fruit. In a decent pot it is a genuine focal point, and it neither sprawls nor runs.
It stays small honestly, without the growth regulators the trade uses to keep bigger varieties in check — so it will not stretch back out on you once it is home. Full sun through to partial shade, rich soil, steady water, and it is content indoors by a bright window through a cold winter.
What actually arrives. All our plants are under six months old and stand 4–8 inches tall at the time of shipping or pickup. These are young plants at the start of their life, not finished
specimens — that is why they cost what they do.

Care notes
Light — full sun. Bananas are solar panels on a stem; shade buys you leaves and no fruit.
Soil — rich and free draining, and they are greedy. Dig in compost or rotted manure before planting and top-dress every spring.
Water — the one thing they will not forgive is drought. In summer a mature plant drinks hard; keep the soil evenly moist and mulch thickly to hold it. Drainage still has to be good, though — standing water rots the corm.
Feeding — heavy feeders. A balanced fertiliser every four to six weeks through the growing season, easing off in winter.
Wind — the leaves shred in a blow. It looks alarming and the plant does not care, but a sheltered spot keeps it looking better.
Cold — see the hardiness zones on this page; they vary by variety. Frost knocks the top down, and if the corm stays unfrozen it comes back in spring. In a pot, move it under cover.
Fruiting — see the time to fruit on this page; it varies by variety. The stem that fruits then dies, which is normal and not a failure. Suckers around the base take over, so keep the strongest one or two and the plant renews itself indefinitely.
