Florida Special was bred for commercial pineapple growing in south Florida, back when there were still fields of it near Immokalee. That heritage is the whole reason to plant it: it was selected to fruit in Florida's swings of heat, downpour and the occasional cold snap, not in a perfect equatorial climate.
The fruit is golden-fleshed and full-flavoured, and ripening fruit has come through nights down into the mid-30s°F without the internal damage that ruins most varieties. If you garden at the cool edge of pineapple country — inland central Florida, the Gulf coast, a sheltered corner of zone 9 — start with this one.
The leaves are spineless, which sounds like a small thing right up until you have weeded around a spiny pineapple. Full sun, sharp drainage, and about 18–24 months to the first fruit.
