Sugarloaf — you will also see it called Kona Sugarloaf — is the variety people name when they argue about which pineapple tastes best. The flesh is pale, nearly white, intensely sweet, and so low in acid that it leaves none of the sting a grocery-store pineapple does. The core is tender rather than woody, so you slice the fruit and eat all of it.

The fruit runs large for a home pineapple, commonly five to six pounds, on a plant that stays one to three feet tall. It is self-fertile, so a single plant will fruit on its own with no partner needed, and the leaf edges are smooth, which makes it a pleasure to work around.

It wants what every pineapple wants: full sun, a gritty free-draining mix, and restraint with the watering can. Around 18–24 months from planting to the first fruit, then suckers to carry it on.

What actually arrives. All our plants are under six months old and stand 4–8 inches tall at the time of shipping or pickup. These are young plants at the start of their life, not finished specimens — that is why they cost what they do.

Care notes

Light — full sun grows the sweetest fruit. They will take partial sun and still fruit, just slower.

Soil — anything sharp and free draining. A cactus or citrus mix with extra perlite is ideal in a pot. They like it slightly acid, around pH 5.8–6.2.

Water — let the top inch dry out before watering again. A pineapple stores water in its own leaves, so the quickest way to kill one is kindness with a watering can. In cool weather water the soil rather than pouring down the centre of the plant.

Feeding — a balanced liquid feed at half strength every four to six weeks through the warm months. They are light feeders and sulk if overfed.

Cold — hardy in zones 9–11. Below freezing the foliage burns, so bring pots under cover or throw a frost cloth over bed-grown plants on a cold night.

Fruiting — figure on 18–24 months from planting. Once the plant carries about thirty mature leaves it is big enough to flower. After it fruits the mother plant slowly winds down and the suckers around its base take over, so leave one or two and the plant keeps going on its own.

We publish the first name only.
Never published — we use it to check your order.
A picture of the plant as it arrived, or how it is doing now, is the single most useful thing you can add.

We read reviews before they go up, so yours will not appear straight away. Critical ones get published too — a page of nothing but five stars helps nobody.
